Course Admin Tab
Course Information & Preferences | Course Enrollment | Group Management
In .NExT, the Course Admin tab defaults to the Course Info & Preferences sub tab. Other sub tabs available under Course Admin include Course Enrollment and Group Management. .NExT enhancements to these areas will be discussed in this section.
Course Information & Preferences
Options available on this page include the following.
- General Information & Settings
- Style Manager (if turned on at the course level by the node administrator)
- Enable/Disable Tools
- Threaded Discussion Preferences
- Course Scheduler
- Survey Report Wizard (if available for that course)
Course Information & Preferences
Course Information & Preferences
There are three new features in the General Information & Settings area of the Course Admin tab.
Long Unit Titles Wrap
From this page users will see the configuration option to display long Unit titles on multiple lines. This option as well as the ability to Display long content item names on multiple lines will default to "on" in new courses. In copied courses it defaults to "off".Course Locale
If the administrator of the node where this course lives has configured the node to allow instructors to set the locale of individual courses, they will see the Course Locale dropdown list on this screen. If set, the course locale sets the language and country for the course, dictating the language in which platform text is displayed as well as how dates, times and numbers are formatted. A course locale always overrides the profile locale of users logging into the course. This may be a desired option when teaching a Spanish language course where the instructor wants to force users to navigate in Spanish, regardless of their profile locale.New Visual Editor
The new cross-platform/cross-browser Visual Editor is available in this area for the Course Description and Required Text areas.
General Information & Settings
In-Course Style Manager
The style manager is enabled only if the administrator for the node where that course lives has enabled it for that node. Most EPs do not allow individual instructors to customize the style because they want to ensure a consistent style campus-wide. However there are exceptions. For more information, visit the Style Manager section of this document.
Enable/Disable Tools
Administrators also determine whether individual instructors will have the ability to disable/enable any element of the tool bar. If this right is turned off, instructors will only see the option to enable or disable Chat and ClassLive. If turned on, instructors will have the ability to enable or disable any of the following elements of the Course Home and Course Toolbar:
Course Home
- Syllabus
- Calendar (users can still access the Course Scheduler when Calendar is turned off. The Course Scheduler is now located in the Course Admin tab)
Course Toolbar
- Gradebook
- Document Sharing
- Chat
- ClassLive
- Dropbox
- Journal
- Webliography
If a tool is disabled after a student has already contributed to that area (such as Dropbox), the data will remain and reappear if the tool is later enabled.

Threaded Discussion Preferences
The available preferences for Threaded Discussion content items are the same, but they're located in their own section - Threaded Discussion Preferences - under the Course Information & Preferences tab. There are two options:
- Whether to allow new posts after the scheduled end dates for the course
- Whether students should be able to edit their threads once they are posted.
Course Scheduler
Instead of being accessible from the author view of Calendar, the Course Scheduler is now available under the Course Information & Preferences sub tab of Course Admin. Aside from the new look and feel and globalization (time zone and locale) settings that have been added to the Course Scheduler, there are no other new features.
Survey Report Wizard
For courses that have access to the Survey Report Wizard, in .NExT it is available under the Course Information & Preferences sub tab of Course Admin.
Course Enrollment
.NExT brings several new enhancements to the Course Enrollment sub tab of the Course Admin tab.
Student Status Summary
At the top of the page, there is a running tally of how many students, pending students, waitlisted students and dropped students are associated with the course.
Column-Level Sorting
Instructors can click on any column heading to sort the table according to that column. By clicking on the Enrollment Date column, for example, the students will be sorted with the most recently enrolled at the top.
New Fields
Enrollment Date, Time Zone, and Language columns have been added for each student in the Class Roster table.
Dropped Students Table
Dropped students are displayed in their own table entitled Dropped Class Members at bottom of the page. The fields for this table are identical to those of the Class Roster table with the exception of the Enrollment Date table. In its place, the Dropped Class Members table displays a Drop Date column.

Group Management
Within the Group Management area, the user interface has been altered so that when selecting group members, the user moves them from a box on the left-hand side of the screen to a box on the right-hand side of the screen.
In addition, users can now add a group and choose to proceed directly to the same screen for the purpose of adding another group by clicking the button labeled Save & Add Another Group.
When adding a Group within the Group Management area, the Group is then shown in both Doc Sharing and Email. The User can then add the group to Chat if so desired.
